How to Fix the "Do You Want to Open This File?" Warning in Windows – Fix This Error Fast
Sometimes when you get security warnings in Windows Vista or Windows 7 when opening a file your first thought is that it might be a virus. In some cases it is this causing the problem. There is one problem in Windows Vista and Windows 7 that may not be due to this though and just changing a few settings can correct this before you panic and go and call a technician.
One such error is this. When you attempt to open a program from the Windows start menu you receive an error that states. “open file – security warning” This appears in a box that opens up. Inside the box it says, “do you want to open this file?” and then will tell you what the file is. What makes many people panic when they see this error is at the bottom of the drop down box there is a warning that states ” while files from the internet can be useful, this file type can potentially harm your computer”.
When people see this their first reaction is that either their computer has been attacked by a virus or malware or this is a fake warning message. This message is in fact due to the security levels in Windows Vista and Windows 7 and you can easily get rid of this error.
This problem usually occurs when the integrity or security levels are changed for the taskbar and start menu, either accidentally or on purpose and there is an easy solution to this problem which you can fix in minutes.
Here is how to fix this error
#1 Click on the start button on the Windows task bar then all programs and then go to accessories. In accessories scroll down to command prompt and right click on it. From the drop down menu that appears click on “run as administrator”. If there is a password for the account you will be asked for it.
You have to run the command prompt as an administrator for this to work so it is important you open it using the step above. Once you have done this the command prompt box will open then go to the next step.
#2 Type in or copy and paste the following text from here into the command prompt box without the quotes:
“ICACLS “%programdata%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms” /Setintegritylevel (OI)(CI)Medium”
#3 Once you have done this press enter and close the box. You should not see this error anymore.
If you still get security errors when opening files or running programs and you also notice your computer has slowed right down as well you may be infected with malware or worse. In this case run a full virus scan.
If the warning message box that appears tells you that you need a to download and buy a piece of software to fix this error then it is likely the message is being generated by malware. If you have followed the previous steps above then the next step is to run a system and registry scanner to find what the problem is. This will stop any running malware fast and get rid of it for good.
